Hey all,

Newbie here, currently have 8 9 week old chicks and building the coop/run as we speak. As I’m building and planning for future plans, I was thinking about how I’d like to at some point adopt a few pigeons and whether or not it would be wise to build my run to accommodate pigeons as well.

Ive seen a few posts here but it seems like most of the time they’re just asking about housing chickens and pigeons in the same coop; I intend to build a separate housing for the pigeons, but would like it to also open up to the same run, almost like a shared aviary with high perches for the pigeons. This would allow both flocks to have their own retreats, but somewhere nice to hang out during the day together.
Has anyone had any luck with this? Or do they still run into issues? I don’t have another spot on my property to build two large runs, so I figured I’d ask while I’m in the process.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Greetings, 👋
I’ve done this exact same set up with the chickens and pigeons sharing the same run but having doors to separate their own special areas and coops. From my experience they both do fine together with the pigeons and chickens both minding their own business and doing very well together. I also have tried the same thing with quail and pheasant with about the same results, but the pheasants got a bit aggressive with the pigeons during the breeding season. In my opinion I think you should go for it with the end results of seeing all the birds together in the run together making a beautiful view and nice way to save space for runs. The People I bought my homers from also had around the exact same setup of pigeons and chickens sharing the same run but having separate coops. Hope this helps. 👍

That’s great to hear! How long did you have them together if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve always loved to idea of having a huge aviary someday, but starting off a little smaller and still getting to enjoy it sounds lovely. Haha.
Thanks for sharing!

I still have them together 😂😂. It’s been about a year around having that setup. The great thing is that I can leave the door open since my pigeons return back to the run and makes the chickens enjoy the grass! I first started my aviary with lovebirds soon got some chickens. Now I got chickens, quail, pheasants, turkeys, and pigeons!! Once you build your aviary and runs your very tempted to get more poultry, it becomes an Addiction almost. 😅 I recommend for avairys and for runs to use stainless steel mesh for any unwanted animals and looks nicer lol.

Haha yes, I can already consider it an addiction as is! 😅 we are already in the process of building a 20’ by 7’ run attached to the coop. I also had potential plans to add 2 ducks to the flock at some point, but trying to pace myself for now 😂

Thanks for sharing the info, any and all suggestions are helpful during this phase!
