Planting fruit trees under pine trees

Have you consider planting a few pawpaw trees. They don't mind shade so you can plant them in between your pines. They also are very cold hardy and like moist soil, so maybe your WA soil would be perfect for them. Fruits are creamy with a banana custard flavor and fruity aroma. If you do get some get the name cultivar and not the wild type as you can expect better taste and larger fruit size.

THankyou everyone for your suggestions. We have chosen 4 pins to come down and are debating on the douglas as the fifth. Its pretty but also closest to the house. That will give my fruit trees plenty of sun and me my best gardening spot back. Now to find someone who wishes to cut my trees for the price of the lumber. h

Nothing will grow well under a pine. The fallen needles actuallyput out out a chemical that prevents most plants from growing. If you lime heavy it will harm the pines.

I do not agree . we have many plants that do well. Many people even mulch there beds with Pine needles.

Sorry, I realized this after I wrote it. Only acid loving plants grow well in pine needles. Blueberries, rhodos heather etc. Most fruit trees do not fall into this category.
We recently sold a pine plantation and one of the beauties of the forest is that it's easy to maintain a stand a pure pine because very few trees can sprout to cause any competition

i decided to move my blueberries, currants, and huckleberries to the the front area. To give people a better idea this is what it looks like plus two more just outta the picture on the left. the ones in the center are boxwood and an apple that doesnt produce.

I am going to put up a 1/3 to 1/2 acre of BlueBerries. They love the acidity and do wonderful up here with are chilly nights. Apples do great here as well and this is one of the better apple regions in the u.s.
