My chickens are open range in my fenced in yard, I want to plants sunflowers in the ground but worry the chickens will eat them once they sprout. Does anyone else have experience planting sunflowers around their chickens?

I too am curious about planting near chickens. I'm planning to put fencing around veggie beds to protect from and . I wonder if I should I put a temporary fence around flowers I plant near the coop.

I tried planting grass last year and... the very week i let them into the area with grass... they completely demolished it. if i try it again i will make some kind of box to protect the roots.

If you want to grow anything near chickens, it needs to be protected, fenced off, blocked, covered or, the chickens just shouldn't have access to that area. At least that's been my experience. Sometimes letting the plant get established first will work, depending on the type of plant. Once sunflowers grow taller than their heads, they're usually safe if the stems are sturdy. Most of my destroyed plants weren't necessarily eaten, they were scratched to death.

I want to plant them, too. I was going to fence them in with a border. I don't know that it will work, but I'll give it a go and make adjustments as necessary.

In the meantime, I'll follow this thread to see what suggestions are offered!
