so our pasture pen has been in service about a week now. one thing we noticed right away that even with the 2.5 (ish) gallon waterer we were having to fill water nearly twice a day. Knowing that water demand was just going to go up as they got bigger, we quickly agreed to move to the bulb waterer that we had seen Salatin use.

For the record, the one we got (and best i can tell the same as Salatin uses) is a Plasson broiler drinker. We ended up getting ours from Gillis AG (perhaps that link will work ----> ) https://gillisag.com/store/product.php?productid=16144&cat=258&page=5

i
ordered over the phone and it was in stock and sent out the same day. Price I think is great considering you have to pay at least that much (usually more) for a hanging waterer in the 5 gal range (plastic or metal).

The kit came with everything you need including 10' of rubber type tubing for the "water line". As i had read all you need to do is drill an under sized hole in your 5 gal bucket and squeeze the water line into it for a water tight fit. Not knowing what size that was, i used a left over piece of plastic barrel (from my wizbang build) and experimented with that till i got a hole that was barely big enough for me to force the line through. I cut the line at a 45deg angle poked the sharp end in the hole then used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull while i pushed the line. For the stock waterline supplied in my kit i used a 9/32 drill bit.

The 5 gal bucket will be covered with a left over piece of window screen and held on by a bungi.

but enough with the blabbing you want to see the pics dont ya!

oh that last one is kinda a teaser shot of my pasture pen. The waterer was the last item i wanted to add before i posted a writeup on my pen. so look for that soon. more pics to come on that!

I used one of these last year but I had a leak issue. Where it connected to the 5 gal bucket it would leak all the time.
I tried using various methods to stop the leaks but it always seemed to start leaking again in a few days.

Does anyone know a better way to connect the hose to the bucket?

i dont think you can see it in the pics but the bucket sits over a cross brace. I dont have a permanent home for the bucket yet, its going to be close to were you see it. It might migrate to the corner with an additional corner cross brace just for the bucket. well just have to feel that out as we move the pen in the comming days.

in addition the top "wire" on my pen is 2x4 fence. so its much more sturdy than even heavy hardware mesh.

It looks like that bucket is 2-3 feet off the ground. If so, that's only 0.8-1.2 psi based on the 0.43 psi per foot of elevation formula. I assume that's working. If so, I can stop searching for a 6-8 psi range pressure reducer.
