My hen started wheezing late this morning, I went to TSupply and got VetRX and Rooster Booster. She ate this afternoon but her wheezing is getting worse. She is slightly open mouth breathing now. I have her separated from the flock in my garage with a brooder heater.

I’ve rubbed VetRX on her comb and wattles and under her wings. I also have it going in a diffuser- is this okay??

When should I see improvement?

Is there anything else I can do?? I don’t want to lose her!!

Vetrx is just Vicks for chickens, it won't treat anything but it might alleviate some symptoms slightly.
Any mucus, gurgling, sneezing? any facial swelling? Any odd behavior?
No Mucus, facial swelling, or odd behavior. Just wheezing pretty drastically, I can hear a veryyyyyy slight sound when she breathes in that might be like congestion or gurgle but it doesn’t sound very wet.

She is open mouth breathing now when she breathes in and it’s like she is having to work to breath in. But the sounds are less when shes breathing.

Is there something I can get tonight at tractor supply? An antibiotic?

Does she seem in distress? Sometimes chickens can have stridor, a high pitched sound that can be made when they get a small piece of feed stuck in the airway. Sometimes it can occur with an obstruction, but it can occur with a respiratory infection with mucus or swelling of the airway.

She seems calm, laying down right now but she just seems to be working hard to breath. She was sneezing earlier today but not right now

Most of the time, this stridor will go away in a few hours when the chicken coughs up the piece of food, or whatever is causing it. Hopefully, she will be fine later. But if she is having sneezing or other symptoms of a respiratory infection she might continue to have it. Let us know how she is getting along. Can she eat or drink anything?

She’s been doing it for about 6-7 hours. Is there something I can do if it’s a respiratory infection? She ate a couple hours ago but wasn’t interested when I tried offering a little bit ago, but it could because she’s laying down and might be ready for bed.

I would let her sleep. If she does have a respiratory infection there is not much you can do right now. In the morning, I would look for any nasal drainage, eye foam or bubbles, swelling around an eye, or mucus inside her beak. Most feed stores don’t have antibiotics for a bacterial respiratory disease, other than injectable oxytetracycline for cattle. If it is a virus, antibiotics don’t help anyway. Some people use the oxytetracycline though. Let us know how she is in the morning.
