Hello, I need help in taking care of my older hen. She’s my absolute favorite and I want to help her. My flock has had scaly leg mites this fall and I can’t seem to get rid of them. I sprayed my coop with the chemical (can’t remember the name) and I’ve been using Vaseline nightly on her. Yesterday morning she was slow to get up, but still got up to eat and drink with the rest of them. Today she doesn’t want to walk. She is still eating and drinking fine, she talks to me like she always has, she just doesn’t want to walk. Her scales are still raised , but I figured it would be a slow process in healing. Am I doing anything wrong? Is there another reason why she doesn’t want to walk? I’m so sad I really don’t want to lose her. I’ll never find another chicken like her. Thank you for your help.

What breed?

Some folks soak the legs and scrub with a tooth brush.. to help remove the old raised scales and reveal new ones underneath.

Possible arthritis.. maybe coupled with the awful condition of motling?

Please describe feed routine including what type (protein/calcium %), supplements, and treats. What is your general location, are you in the US?

If she's just painful.. is it possible to see a vet and get something for pain management (usually meloxicam or metacam)? I know over the counter some folks use aspirin.. I'm under the impression that it's not a good choice for long term management.

Hope she feels better! :fl

She’s a Salmon Faverolles. We live on a dairy so she eats flaked corn and molasses barley soaked in milk. They also get kitchen scraps. I’m in the southeast corner of Idaho. We do have a vet, but he has no experience with chickens and I can’t get anything from him till Monday.

How much aspirin? And how do I feed it to her?

Do your birds eat any formulated feed? She may be suffering from nutrition deficiency.
