For the ground contact portions of my coop I was looking at using cedar, but even cedar will need to be replaced after awhile. I just saw that the big box stores are offering “polymer coated wood” as a replacement for pressure treated wood. I was wondering if anyone here has done research and this and knows 1) if it is safe for animals 2) if it has the same structural capacity as standard lumber 3) if it lives up to the claim of 25 years 4) how Cut portions can be treated.

Thanks for your input!

I plan on a new woods coop build this year. Last year and year before we used blackjack 57 on the floors of the hen house. And I told the wife then that if we bury post that I was going to coat the bottom 36" with the black jack 57. So the new build will have a dirt floor and then say a cedar 2x10 buried and another on top at ground level up 10" both will be coated with blackjack 57.

I have not seen the poly coat wood. But I would think that would be 10x better than the treated lumbers offered today.
I am also Interested to see what others think.

Never heard of it either.
This stuff is still treated(non toxic?) under poly coating.
Wonders about the 'end caps' being water tight,
do those have to be purchased separately??
What about cutting the stuff, then what about ends?
Fastenner penetration?
It certainly is dear at $15 for a 2x4x8.
This makes me think about coated wire mesh fencing,
coating cracks, let in water-and holds it, then rots out 'invisibly'.

Tried to read FAQ and Installation Guide, but my browser said 'no, not right now'.
