I am back with a question about my runners. We have a natural pond about one acre on our land. It is downhill from our house. The ducks live at the top of the hill with us and have a kiddie pool, etc. they free range and have a couple acres up there. They have now found their way to the pond multiple times but have not gotten in before I got them.

What are your thoughts on letting them go in the large pond? I'm scared they will get hurt. We have snakes, muskrats etc. I'm in North Carolina. We also have a geese family that has babies every year and they always loose a couple along the way (not sure how) I would rather play it safe and not let them in the large pond. My husband thinks they'd be okay. I think a fence is a better idea. They still have a ton of room up at the top of the hill.

Pics of large pond attached along with ducks for smiling purposes.

The pond is beautiful but I am with you. There is a chance that anything could happen to them once they get used to getting on the pond. What would happen if they decide they like it so much that they no longer want to come in at night? That has happened to other folks before. Also if you have any large snapping turtles they could lose a leg or foot or even be taken under and drowned by one. I know of a person that had ducks on is pond and a snapper got one's leg and he ended up having to have to put it down because it got infected and was never right again after that. I hope what ever you decide works out best for your ducks. I have also heard that some Runners are not even crazy about staying in water a lot.

Thanks for the reply - Yes we have turtles too. I'm going to keep them at top, I just needed reassurance :) They do love a good swim though!
