I went outside to feed all my birds early this morning, as I always do. When I checked on my king quails, I found Pinga (my hand raised quail) with a bleeding head. She lives with her two sisters and younger brother (I don't breed them) and they all get along like loving siblings. However, lately they've been laying eggs, so that could be causing conflict. I have another group of females (mother and daughters) who fight when they have eggs. I assume one (or more) of them must have attacked her.

I separated her from her siblings and brought her inside. I'm keeping her as clean as possible to avoid infection. I've had similar quail injuries before, but any advice would be appreciated.

Here's some pictures of her

yes that does appear different than typical overbreeding or breeding injury. I would clean the wound and consider separating if possible to allow a bit of healing and then determine which group to try to re-introduce her to.

Separating her was the first thing I did. I will probably end up re-introducing her to her sisters once she's healed. I might consider moving her little brother out and getting him a girl of his own though.

Would you recommend putting anything on it (if so, what?) or do you think I should leave it to heal on it's own?

i would re-evaluate once you’ve cleaned it.....a little neosporin (minus pain relief of course) probably wouldn’t hurt but my feeling it that it looks way worse than it actually is. i still have one pretty bald from budgie assault but doing fine

I don't think Neosporin is available in Australia. Is there an alternative that would be available?

I'm in the middle of expanding their space. They do have a hiding space but they don't really use it. I'm keeping an eye to make sure no one else is attacked either.

Any antiseptic wash should work, but not with pain killer.

Hey Quailobsessed, I just saw this post and I hope little pinga is ok now; but just for future, I’ve used dilute betadine antiseptic on such injuries before with really good results. (You know, that red stuff generally sold as a sore throat gargle here).

She healed up well. She's currently raising her younger brother (because their parents are bad at raising chicks) who's a few weeks old now (just staring to show signs of a bib). The same thing happened to her sister a few days ago, but she seems alright too.
