One of my two chicken has an issue going on that I’m looking for any advice with. I just noticed her standing with her back feathers down I originally thought she was egg bound without a good look. I began by putting her in a warm bath and getting her cleaned up and that’s what I noticed it’s below the vent. From research I thought it was a hernia? I also think it might be a tumor? I’m just not sure and have no idea what to do. This is the second day now I’ve seen it. Today I gave her another warm bath with Epson salt cleaned it and applied antibiotic ointment. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

This looks like the skin has been pecked and wounded or has burst open. Can you see any maggots in the wound? That can happen in warm weather when flies are out, and can cause fly strike. Has her lower belly been enlarged or firm? Has she been pecked or injured?

I don’t believe she has been injured in anyway and I do not see maggots. Below the area shown seems swollen and uncomfortable. I’m mainly just concerned at what the protruding area could be?

She could have a reproductive infection or salpingitis, even possibly cancer that has made her lower abdomen full. A weakness in the abdominal wall or hernia can cause the bulge or opening. I would clean her wound twice a day and keep it covered with Neosporin ointment. She should be kept separated from the others in a dog crate with food and water, so that she is not pecked. If it splits open more, her abdominal contents could come out. If she was just pecked some, and it opened, she could heal with cleaning and the Neosporin. Has she been laying eggs?

Thank you for the advise, I have been cleaning and applying Neosporin. She is an older chicken probably 7 years old so we rarely will lay an egg but still will every now and then.

How is she doing today? She may be more comfortable in a crate inside the coop or run where she can see the others, but not be able to be pecked. I was looking through some old threads about enlarged abdominals which had split, in case you would like to read about them:

She seems to be okay she is still eating just fine I’ve also added Hen Boost to her water but I haven’t seen her drink any she could have I just haven’t caught it. She is separated currently as well. I’m concerned at how dark(black) the rim of the wound is.

Will she be able to survive from this?

From other forums it does looks like salpingitis, this happens below the vent? Does the tissue end up working itself out or what would happen in this case?
