I wasn't sure where to put this, but this figured like the most suitable place. I'm looking for recommendations on Poultry books. What are your favorite and why?
Thank You!

P.S. All books welcome from simple quick reads, like magazines to Ph.D level reading and studies that have been done. All things count. I'm not too picky!

Apa standard of perfection 59.00 from APA
Sigrid van dort " the genetics of chicken colours-the basics" and her " genetics of chicken extremities" her website:

Hathitrust digital library website: "Breeding Laws..." by Card. Full view, read on-line. Keyword searchable.
"21st century poultry Breeding" by Greg Brereton : see the
www.poultrykeepers.com website.
Best Regards,
Karen

What ever you choose, I would suggest getting them from the library before buying.
We have a state wide library exchange and I can get about anything I've looked for, even the APA SOP book, which was an older version but still pretty darn accurate.

Most are not worth having on the shelf IMO.
All, even the better ones, contain some good things and some 'bad' or out of date things.
Many are just riding the 'backyard chicken wave' and should never have even been printed.

The only two I've seen that are worth buying are:
Harvey Ussury's small scale poultry.
Gail Damerow chicken health.
Tho I still go to the net and/or my own notes that I've gathered over 4 years when I
need a solution.

There is so much great information here, but I really want to get my kids a few good books on chickens, their health and breeding.....

If there are any other books that you like please let me know.
Thanks.

Then just get the Damrow and the Ussury books.
They can further their education with the others later on.
For more breeding assistance, contact the breed Clubs for the breeds you have and those threads on BYC. The APA also has a Juniors section for kids.
Best,
Karen

The APA Standard of Perfection, and the ABA Standard only apply to exhibiting birds. My son competes as a junior, but i am not a fan of YEPA. I would not bother with Damerow, Ussury, Brereton, etc. What exactly are you looking for? Short list of favorites are Nutrition of the Chicken by Scott (not the new revised edition), Genetics of the Fowl by Hutt, and Avian Physiology edited by Sturkie. As far as health, see if you can find something from an animal pharmaceutical company. They tend to be short and easy to follow as far as diagnosing and treating diseases. Like someone mentioned, I would look before buying, as these books can be pricey.
