Hi everyone!
We have recently bought 6 new egg layers to add to our flock. They started laying about 3 weeks ago. Yesterday I saw this hanging out of one of their vents. I've googled but can't work out what it is- a prolapse? A malformed egg? It feels hard. We have just given her a 20 minute soak in warm water and gently washed the poop off but not sure what to do next, not being sure what the issue is. What do you guys think?

I am not sure of her diet, but try giving her a human calcium citrate pill or Tums (generic ok), to get some more calcium in her pronto.

I just had this happen 2-3 weeks ago. I took the hen from the coop at night and put her in a carrier/cage and brought her in the house. I also kept the bathroom lights low (if possible), when I gave her a epsom bath (which I purchased 2 years ago for this reason).

Not always easy to get some to swallow the pill and it may take a few tries.

As @nuthatched wrote, have you tried to "ease" it out? You don't want too much pressure. Be calm, we are here to help.

That appears to be a prolapsed vent or cloaca. Does it feel like an egg is present?
No I don't think there is an egg in there- it's smaller than an egg and a bit of a different shape. But it does feel hard- which leaves me confused as to whether it's a prolapse or a weirdly formed egg.

What have you done so far to treat the prolapse? Have you been trying to push it back in and get it to stay? Keep it moist, cover it in ointment, honey, vaseline, hydrocortisone cream, etc. If the swelling goes down, then it may be easier to tell what's going on and if it's an egg, get it out. Honey, hydrcortisone, or plain white sugar applied mixed in an ointment can help reduce swelling. Everything has to be kept moist, if that tissue dries out it will become necrotic. I can't feel it, so it's hard to say if it's egg (could be a fairy or fart egg, which can happen with new layers) or if it's swollen tissue. If you are able to remove anything, take pictures.
