I bought eight baby chicks from a local feed store about four days ago. I have bought chicks from this store and never had any problems. Though today I noticed a lot of them have pasty butt, so I treated them until I got to last one, she’s a blue silky, I noticed hers was way worse than the others, I started treating it but I saw what looked almost a tumor on her vent so I stopped as soon as I saw it. I did some research and I came to a conclusion that’s it’s a prolapsed vent, but I don’t know this to treat it, and I don’t want to make it worse trying clean up more of the poop, what do I do?

You do want to clean up the poop as best you can without tearing any skin. A warm soak and some mineral oil might help. You also want to keep the prolapsed tissue moist. If it dries out it become necrotic and then you;ll have more problems. I'd clean the tissue with vetericyn then apply an ointment like hydrocortisone cream to keep it moist and help reduce inflammation. You can try gently pushing the prolapse back in, though sometimes that doesn't work and you just have to wait and hope it goes back in on its own.

The prolapse was likely caused from straining to poop so I'd make sure she is drinking enough water and maybe give her a little bit of coconut oil to help her pass her poop.

What temps are they in? What's your setup? My 2.5week olds are in temps of *44 with a MHP to get under that is about *75 I think, not sure. Point is, I still never deal with pasty butt. I had one that I thought was poop butt but upon inspection it was umbilical cord so I left it totally alone. Preparation H can help with prolapse.
