I went to check for eggs and disturbed my barred rock. When she was done I noticed a stringy thing hanging from her vent and she was struggling to get it out so I put on a glove and helped her. Yesterday she laid an egg with a thin shell and blood inside not just a speck but streaks throughout the white… now this.

One of our 5 hens has laid soft eggs before but that was about 6 months ago- no issues since.

Your hen has a calcium deficiency that should be treated before she has an episode of egg binding which can be life threatening. She needs calcium boosting with a concentrated supplement. This is what I recommend until she is laying good solid eggs again.

One tablet, whole, directly in her beak for as long as it takes to gets the shells strong. Then she can go back to oyster shell. She is getting oyster shell free choice, right?
