This is my silkie/bantam brahma mix Oakley. She hatched on the April 23rd. I believe she should be around 23 or 24 weeks old. I was petting her today and she started squatting. I know that means she'll start laying soon, but how soon should I expect the first egg? A couple weeks? A month? More? Also will I be able to tell wich egg is hers? First eggs are supposed to be smaller, right? I currently have 4 other hens that lay.
My rooster Cloud isn't properly breeding my hens yet too. He is the same ageas Oakley (maybe a 1 day difference). Right now I don't really care, but I need him to be successfully breeding my hens by March next year. Do you think he'll figure it out till then?

Oakley in the middle. The blurry one on the right is Cloud.

Squatting is one of those signs that she might start laying soon. It is not a guarantee. Squatting is more of a submission to dominance behavior instead of an I'm about to lay behavior. I once saw a 13-week-old pullet willingly squat for a 13-week-old cockerel and she did not lay for at least 6 more weeks but she accepted his dominance. It is a good sign, it means she has matured to the point that she can accept dominance instead of fight it and that could mean laying soon.

In general, yes they are typically fairly small compared to what they will eventually lay. I'm not sure how big the other hens' eggs are and there may be a difference in color or shade but there is a good chance you will be able to tell a difference.

It's not just him, the girls have something to say about that too, but it is about as sure as anything to do with chickens that the eggs will be fertile next March.
