Hi! As the title says, I have a Cochin pullet around 14/15 weeks old who presented very suddenly with both eyes swollen today. I got her and 3 other pullets when they were around 7 weeks old, the Cochin had some respiratory stuff going on at that time (raspy breathing sounds, nasal discharge) none of the others were sick, and the others never developed any symptoms. I used some vet rx and she got over everything after a week or so. Her and the three others have been in with the rest of my flock for over a week now. No one has been sick in my older flock.

I spend time with all my chickens and everyone gets held multiple times a day, I held the Cochin last night and all was fine. This afternoon I let everyone out and noticed the Cochin didn’t come out. I found her sitting inside the coop, eyes swollen and bubbly and nodding off. She also has a bad smell coming from her face. Up until I saw her a couple hours ago she has been eating and drinking fine, poop is normal, she’s been active and running around up until this point too. Any thoughts on what’s going on? I have some terramycin ointment that I’ve just now put on her eyes. I also rubbed some vet rx onto her beak and dripped some around in her bedding. Shes separated from everyone else.

Seeing a vet isn’t an option, so I can’t get cultures and blood work, nor can I get a prescription for meds.

***no injuries that I could see, my first thought was that she got pecked in the eye but then I saw the other eye was also swollen and figured it was unlikely that both eyes got pecked***

It looks like she might have some upper respiratory infection going on (to me.) If you are wanting to treat it naturally, I would give her apple cider vinegar and fresh herbs. Some recommended ones for upper respiratory conditions in chickens are basil, bee balm, clover, dill, echinacea, mint nasturtium, oregano, rose petals, rosemary and thyme. I hope she feels better!

There is the possibility that she was pecked around the face and eyes, but a respiratory disease could be the cause. Is there any sneezing or nasal drainage? You can get some antibiotics online from Jedds.com usually, but they can take up to a week to come. Tylosin powder for the water, Enrofloxacin 10% liquid to give orally, and doxycycline are some that treat MG. MG causes bubbles or foam in swollen eyes, sometimes on one side or both.

Sulfa antibiotics are more for treatment of coryza. Coryza smells bad and can cause gunky swollen eyes. Can you look inside her beak for any yellow or gray gunk, or a bad odor? Canker inside the beak can also cause a bad odor.

That’s the thing about it! No sneezing, no nasal discharge, no wheezing or crackly breathing. Her eyes bubble in the corners if she shakes her head but there’s not really “discharge”. She won’t let me look in her mouth, I didn’t want to stress her out too much.

She perked back up by nighttime, this morning her eyes already look so much better and she’s acting back to normal. Her eyes are still swollen, and her skin color around her eyes is off (it’s like you can see the greenish yellow color of the infection under her skin) but it’s a huge difference from yesterday afternoon.

I almost wonder if she could have gotten stung by something or even bitten by enough mosquitos that it caused that much swelling? She was scratching at it a lot too. She looks almost completely normal now, less than 24 hrs later
