I’m in no way an expert but I do know Cochins aren’t crested. And I’ve never heard of any chicken getting a crest at 5 months old due to a “growing phase”. So I’m asking the experts. These are 100% not pure Cochins correct?

Those are not Cochins, neither bantam or large.

Cochins do not have a crest and are not black faced. They have yellow skin, very yellow feet, and yellow bills. Their tails also look like a dust mop hanging across their bum.

The also have very soft, larger shaped feathers. They literally are the feather dusters of the bird world.

Those appear to be Silkie-Cochin crosses, and are mixed birds....leaning far more to the Silkie side.

Don't buy if you want pure bred Cochins. Don't buy from this seller ever if they are trying to pass these off as pure Cochins who get a crest shortly through a "growing phase."

Thank y’all. That’s what I was sure of but this person is persistent that these are purebred Cochins. They claim they have never owned a crested bird either. Can, and excuse my un scientific wording here, the crest gene be recessive in two birds that when bred together have created off spring?

I'm not sure of the genetics for crests. My Cream Legbar olive egg mixes have had dominant crests, but I have seen crests drop out pretty fast. It is possible two impure birds could match recessive genes to create crested offspring.

However, skin color is a wrong, body shape is wrong, tail is wrong, feather style wrong.

These birds are products of mixes, with Silkie close enough back to allow black skin and crests.

Tails are wrong for both Silkie and Cochin, so there was something else involved too. Ditto for feathers.

Point of pure breeds is that they breed pure with no, or very few, surprises if line is controlled.

This owner has mixed birds not Silkies or Cochins.

Thank you! They must have some type of pther genetics mixed in. This one also looks bearded and Cochins are definitely not bearded in any country or variety correct? I don’t know why they are lying about them. Those are very very obviously crests.

They are lyin bout it cause people believe them and their chicks are sold. And to the seller that is their bottom line.... not makin a good name for themselves and for the breed. It is simply greed sounds like to me. I wouldnt ever buy a single bird from them even if they are supposed be reputable... cause it is obvious they are lyin. Piss poor jerks!
