I bought a new bag of Layena Crumbles (been using it for the past 2 years) and I noticed new, different colored pellets that weren't there before. The packaging is also new. Has anyone else noticed this?

The reason I ask is 2 days after starting this new bag, one of my chickens died. She went to bed up on a roost and I woke up to find her dead on the floor of the coop. She was a little less than 2 years old.

Could just be coincidence, but I'd like to make sure. I just emailed Purina as well with the same info.
Thanks!

I don't feed that brand. All you are seeing is the pellets that haven't been ground up enough. Crumble is just pellets that are ground a bit.

Chickens do sometimes just die. They are healthy one day and dead the next. It's not unusual. I generally suspect either a heart problem, fatty liver if you feed lots of treats, or a hen getting frightened, perhaps by a predator sniffing about, and breaking her neck flying into the wall at night.

x2. Often a few pellets end up in the bag of crumble, and it's fine.
What's the mill date on the bag? Always buy fresh!
Keep feed in the original bag, so if there is ever a possible issue with feed, the company can trace it by lot ##, etc, and help. Certainly pay attention if you have more deaths or sudden illnesses, and keep bodies in plastic, chilled, not frozen, for possible necropsies.
Did you do an 'at home' necropsy of your dead hen?

Did she eat the label from the bottom of the bag?
In your pix it looks like the label and sew band may have been eaten.

Purina will need the code on the band to know which mill bagged the feed.
Shown here on my bag of Purina Scratch Grains. 20200325_150451_resized.jpg . I frequently find a different color pellet in my Purina crumbles. GC
