I have tried many times to get photos of our adult Purple peacocks that shows the good purple coloration but the photo always ends up with the chest color looking blue.

Here is two- 2 yr old Black Shouldered Purple males, even though they have great purple coloration when I look at them; in the photos it looks more blue to me.

I also get people that think they have Purple peafowl because there males will show some purple color, but after looking at them generally it turns out to be a Blue India. As I see it- Blue Indias have a Blue chest that reflects purple, but the base color is irredscent BLUE. The opposite is true for Purple Peafowl they have a Purple colored chest that reflects Blue.

The other main difference between Blue Indias and Purples is the coloration of the shoulder/wing. Blue Indias have a darker brown coloration with the black barring. Normal Purples (Barred-wing pattern) are more of a fawn/tan coloration with dark brown barring.

Here are two yearling peacocks- one is a Blue India the other is a Purple.

Hopefully you can see the difference in the shoulder colors and the chest colors.

Any purple based colored peafowl breed will have the lighter brown/tan colored shoulders. What I mean by purple based peafowl breeds is: Purples, Black Shouldered Purples, Purple Pied, Purple Silver Pied, etc.

Another consideration in PURPLE peafowl is the strain or breeder you acquire them from- I have seen purples (that are purples) but just do not show it as strong as some of the better purple bloodlines, where the purple is more intense.

Peafowl can come in several different colors- BLUE, PURPLE, WHITE, CAMEO, JADE, PEACH, BRONZE, OPAL, GREEN, etc then you have different patterns that you can add- BARRED WING PATTERN (often called NORMAL or BLUE INDIA PATTERN), SOLID WING PATTERN (usually called BLACK SHOULDERED PATTERN), PIED PATTERN, SILVER PIED PATTERN, WHITE EYED PATTERN. You can add 2 patterns on a color: example would be SOLID WINGED PIED PUPLES aka Black Shouldered Purple Pied.
