Hi y'all! I was wondering about somethin'. So, I am in the process of butchering and while most of the chicken's craws cleaned out, one did not. The craw was punctured while gutting. Is the chicken still okay to eat or is the meat tainted? Thanks in advance for your answers!

Craw??

Do you mean crop or gizzard?

Just be sure to rinse the meat very well and it should be okay.

Had you withheld feed for the 12-24 hours prior to processing? If so there should be minimal food residue in the crop or gizzard

The crop. I wasn't sure what it was called. Some folks call it a craw but then there's somethin' called sour crop. Yeah, I did withhold feed for about 12 hours which is why I was a little curious as to why it was pretty full. The other chickens' were practically empty! Thanks for gettin back to me!

Yeah we've even had a small intestine puncture and just rinsed it super well. For the reason of crop punctures I sometimes will tie off the esophagus and cut the crop off and pull it out the top after loosening.

You could try withholding feed longer next time or if they have access to the ground dirt really anything some birds will eat whatever they can when food is being withheld. We had one cockeral that ate mud and totally filled his crop.
