Hi. I am new to raising chicks. Before buying, I did lots of research and had a whole plan. I went to my local TSC and discovered they had only 1 of the types of chicks I thought would be good got me to raise in Louisiana. I purchased 8 chicks in total. I was told by an employee that any of them were great for our area or they wouldn’t be sold here. As I got hone and researched them I discovered that Wyandotte are cold climate chickens and prone to heat stroke. I live in Louisiana, where we have triple digits temps through most of the summer. What can I do to keep these two Wyandotte’s healthy and comfortable?

I live in Houston Texas and my Wyandotte is 5 years old. She is still laying eggs.

That is great to hear. You just took a load off of my mind. Thank you!!
Your bird will be just fine.
Don't feed treats daily and if you do remember do not give more than a spoonful of whatever treat it is per bird.

In the summer I would just make sure they have good shade and cold water.

I started with chickens 8 months ago. All the books tell you about cold/heat hardiness. There is definitely something to it but its honestly not the biggest deal. Most chickens will need care in extreme cold or hot anyways.

Long story short, they will do great!!! Good luck with your chicken keeping adventures!! :D :D

I live in South Florida. Hot and humid. I have two Wyandotte’s In my flock. They do fine. Lots of shade and I try to keep their water cold with a block of ice. I also have A shallow container they can wade in. There is more information on this site how to keep your chickens cool in the hot weather. Enjoy your chicks!
