Question of the Day - Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025

I'm not particularly fond of bread, but my favorite is my grandmother's cloverleaf yeast rolls.

When I first asked her for the recipe around two decades ago, she told me she doesn't write anything down and didn't have one so I spent ages trying to find a recipe that tasted similar. I'm not in any way a baker, so this was a pain in the dupa, and I never found anything that came close. For whatever reason, a yeast roll recipe does not seem to exist that actually tastes like yeast! My grandmother's rolls always punched you in the face with their yeasty smell as soon as you walked in the door to her home, and they tasted every bit as yeasty as they smelled. She'd make quadruple batches because no one could resist them, and she'd still run out of them before dinner came around unless she remembered to hide some.

Well, this past year my Mom texted me a yeast roll recipe, and they were bang on! My husband walked in the door and exclaimed "WHOA!" because the smell of yeast in the house was deliciously overpowering! I asked Mom where she found the recipe, and it was my grandmother's! Written in her own handwriting. No one knows where it came from, as she herself doesn't remember writing it (just a memory thing, not an "ooooh, spooky!" thing).

I also loathe cinnamon rolls with a fiery passion, but cinnamon rolls made with my grandmother's yeast roll dough are delectable. I don't understand it.
