Question of the Day - Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024

You know what? I'm just going to list them all. Just remember, y'all brought this upon yourselves.
My cockatiel's name is Abby because she came with that name and all efforts to change it were in vain - not because I couldn't get her to respond to anything else, but because if you met her, she is Abby.
Rip the Cairn terrier because he's a Rip, and Alex the other Cairn because I let my husband name him - I think it's a character he likes from a book.
Faustus the squirrel, named after Doctor Faustus. The Rabbits are Sansa, because she has red hair, and Gwen, because I like Arthurian tales.
Now for my poultry; I know many wouldn't consider them pets, but I consider anything I don't plan on eating outside of an apocalypse situation a pet, so here goes:
First, the one out of 60 guineas I've named. He's called Purple, because he's the only surviving royal purple in the flock and therefore the only one I can pick out of the swirling mass of guinea goofballs. Super original, I know.
Next, my goose trios, named based on where their breed originated:
Tex, Dakota, and Missy, my buff Americans, all named after states;
Hans, Heidi, and Hilda, my Embdens; Jean-Luc (Picard), Madeleine (Maddy), and Eugenie (Jenny), my Toulouse.
Now for my ducks: My drake is Winger. He was named after a character from the show Community along with several others, of whom only Annie and Shirley remain. Besides Annie and Shirley, my hens are Inigo, named after the fencing Spaniard because she could always be found sitting on a fence; Katya, because at the time I had another Drake called Putin and I wanted another Russian sounding name; Snafu, because her hatch was a mess; Genghis, daughter of Putin and therefore in need of a powerful name.
And finally my chickens:
Rumplestiltskin (Rumps), my cock, who managed to weave a bad situation (for him) into gold by killing my favorite cock. Before that, Rumps had been destined for the pot. He's actually very sweet, so don't let the story of his murderous past color your judgment of him.
Romulous and Remus, the naked neck brothers. I named them assuming one might eventually kill the other, and going by the Roman story, I named my favorite of the two Romulous. So far all the boys Rumps throws are sweethearts, though. They went through the teenage hormonal skuffles and are content with the pecking order so far.
Klaus, my half bantam. He's white with the Easter Egger beard, so he reminded me of Santa Claus. He's separated from the rest of the chicken flock with his mom, Goldie, named because I like Goldie Hawn, and one of his 4 surviving sisters, who I pretty much collectively call the Golden Girls because they're Goldie's Girls.
The other Hens in the flock proper are: Nattie, named for Nat King Cole;
Li'l Dot, named for her mother, a Wyandotte oh so originally named Dottie;
Marian, named because her coloring reminds me of a Robin;
Soprano, named because her mother was one of the brown leghorns I collectively call the Italian Mafia due to their breed origins;
Cinder and Elise, my original Easter Eggers and collectively called CinderElla. Elise has two daughters name ABBA and Drew. The three of them are all named for music my mother-in-law loved;
Stacey, Claudia, and Dawn, my three Wyandottes so named for my former love of the Babysitters Club books;
Pidge, a speckled sussex who was named in anticipation of her feathering out to look like a pigeon pooped all over her;
and finally, in a stroke of Captain Obvious genius, Cuckoo, my cuckoo marans.
I also have several as yet unnamed pullets that are still growing, so if you've made it this far, feel grateful you didn't have to sit through a dozen or so more names!

If you thought this was bad, just picture my poor mother sitting there patiently as her young daughter listed out the names of every doodlebug she'd come across that day. Back then I named animals every word I liked, too, so there'd be Sunshine-Rainbow-I-love-you-so-much-Joy Doodlebug, Autumn-Lovely-Clouds-Sprinkle-Hope-Cowboy Doodlebug, etc. That woman had the patience of a saint sometimes.

My cockatiel is named George Mohawk Louis, just because I thought that sounded funny when I got him. And the dog was named Thor by my son, because of the Norse god of lightening. The chickens have names but they aren't pets. But I let my nieces and nephews name them. Never again. We have a Banana Split, Jafaria, Omelet, Oreo, Jayquelin(Key and Peele), Peggy, and Laura

I usually end up naming the pets. I'll find some random name that seems to suit them and fancy it up. Like Duchess Charlotte Wigglebritches, here. She wags her little stub tail so furiously her whole booty shakes.

Dragon, a bearded dragon because Mom Vetoed the name Kimi.

Willow, a cat, because that's what she said her name was

Sasha, a rez dog, because it was the one the family liked the most that I offered up

A pup named Whiskey. I asked the lady I bought him from if she had been calling him anything since he was 3 months old when I picked him up, and she smiled and said Whiskey. I decided it was perfect since I am fond of a good Whiskey.

I had a cat named Cat up until fairly recently. I don't name chickens, or consider them pets. But, I do have an EE I call Squeaky because she squeaked when she was a young pullet. She is pretty cool being she has survived a few things like a snake attack that killed 3 of her sisters at 4 weeks of age, and she was the only one to make it through a free ranging massacre a couple of years ago. And, she likes to crow from time to time and isn't too bad at it. She also still lays me some blue eggs when she takes a notion to. So, I guess she deserves to be called something.

My dog's name is Sterling. He came with the name, so I don't know why he was named that.

As far as my chickens, there's a lot, so I'm not going to go over them all. For a few specials, there's Beth II, who was named after my first Beth who was my older sister's favorite back when I had Beth I. The name just fit her and stuck. Then there's Betty, and my brother named her after the famous actor who had just died before I got her. And lastly, there's Bandit who is sometimes called Bandit-Hawk. I named her after a cockerel I had that was named Smokey, but didn't want to reuse his name. The Hawk part of Bandit's name comes from an EE that I used to have who's name was Hawk as Bandit looks similar to her.
