Questions about banded buckling, need advice please

Hello all,
Hoping someone here has experience with goats and can ease my worries. New to owning goats. We banded our ~10 week old buckling last week. All went well, almost TOO well, it seems. Made sure both testes were in, teats were out, he peed afterwards, no issues. He has not shown a single sign of pain or discomfort.

When I checked on him last night (one week since banding) his testicles don’t really look any different? They still feel warm. Is it possible the band is too loose? We used the green cheerio one from TSC. Is one week too soon to tell? Do I need to be concerned?

Help?

Both testes are snug inside one band with no swelling above the band? The process is very gradual - they should eventually start to shrink and harden over the next few weeks and completely fall off in about 2 months, but warmth from swelling is normal for the first week as long as it's below the band... You can always take his temperature to check if he's running a fever.

Correct, both are inside the band, no noticeable swelling anywhere, above or below. The band itself is snug in/on the skin. I didn’t mess with it, just tried to get a look.

This is my first time and I guess I am nervous.

Thank you for your reply!

Keep an eye on him, but usually swelling in the wrong spot or redness is the first sign of something going wrong. If everything stays looking good, I wouldn't worry too much, just make sure that it gradually starts shrinking over the next couple weeks. Most goat folks that I know use the green bands and it works well. The only issue would be if he didn't have enough tissue to properly fill the band, but at his age that shouldn't be the case unless he was underweight/sickly, and he looks pretty robust in the photo!

Thank you for your input! Will keep an eye on him, and try to convince my brain that things going well is not secretly a sign that things are going terribly wrong somehow…

Best of luck! You can always try tagging some of the goat folks direct or going over to the Backyard Herds forum on the sister site if you're feeling a little stressed over it still. I've never banded goats myself so I'm going off of academic/friends with sheep experience.

Didn’t know about the Backyard Herds site, will check it out. Thanks!
