Has anyone done a rain barrel system for their coop/run? Did you then filter it somehow or oxygenate it??

I am in the design phase of our future coop and considering collecting rain runoff from the run area, but unsettled of having the water sit in a rain barrel... It would then "automatically" water the chickens...

Was thinking rain barrel to biofilter to chicken waterer...Or some such setup.

Not for my chickens, but for my pigeons due to no water connection in thier field lol. We have a rain barrel designed to take water through paper filtration then it is deposited in barrel and has a dispersal nozzle for pouring it :) it rains constantly here so we actually needed to replace the sheet filter a few times due to wear in harsh wind/rain storms but it fullfills it's purpose :)

Problem for me is that it takes a lot of constant rain supply so ours we still have to carry out water in summer as our barrel is black plastic and will heat up in summer to point of water in the barrel evaporating :/

Thinking of drilling a hole to fit a hose nozzle to we can just run water to barrel and fill it if we run out rather than run buckets back and forth -_-

I thought Washington had scads of rain all the time, probably a common misconception. :D
Why would water evaporate, isn't barrel mostly closed up?
