Does anyone know if you need to have a permit or licenses to raise quail in texas i live in ennis texas and i have some chickens and ducks and was thinking of geting in to a few quail but i have heard people say you need a permit or licenses and some say you dont so im not sure

Contact your county extension office, but, in general, there are two types of quail. "Wildlife" quail (Bobwhites, California, Gambel's, etc.) and backyard quail (coturnix, button.) A lot of the time, rules for the one don't apply to the other. If you're asking people about "quail" you'll get different answers on that basis alone.

Hope that helps.

Also, I refer you to this page: https://library.municode.com/tx/ennis/codes/code_of_ordinances

It looks pretty straightforward. Search "quail"--

Fowl: Chickens, ducks, swans, guineas, pigeons, pheasants, peacocks, geese, turkeys, quail, dove or similar feathered animals except parakeets, parrots or other birds that are customarily retained as common household pets.

Search "fowl"

    (2)

Cleaned up manure or refuse shall be promptly removed from the vicinity after each cleaning.

    (Ord. No. 02-4-7, § I, 5-6-02)

As a brief scan of either document will show, Coturnix are not mentioned. I think you have to have a license for all others (native species.)

Yes you do I checked with the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. you need to apply for the permit by filling up a form available in their website and mail with the fee in order to get the permit.

FYI, this thread is seven years old, and the person you're replying to hasn't been active in almost as long. Most states do require permits for native quail species, so you may want to double check about coturnix (Japanese) quail.
