Hi all!

I'm a novice chicken owner and have discovered our first red mite infestation. (Ew! :eek:That creeped me out this morning!)

So after some UK specific advice on how to treat and what products you would recommend.
We have a wooden home built coop with large attached nesting box which they all share. We have 5 chickens, and one is broody at the moment do I fear she is probably covered as she keeps sitting in the nesting box.
So annoyed as I cleared out they're bedding on Sunday and there was no sign, and today found them in about 6 or 7 different spots. Grrrr!

I've read through the advice post but whilst it explains the different mites, it doesn't say how to treat for them specifically.

Thanks in advance everyone.

I would recommend using this in your coop - Total Mite Kill
It kills them fast but you need to get it in all the nooks & crannies as the mites are great at hiding as they generally come out on a night to feed from the birds. Re treat the coop every 3-4 days to try and break the life cycle of the mite. Unfortunately they are an horrendous pain in the back side!

I don't know what is available where you live. I looked up Total Mite Kill but couldn't find the ingredients but here in the US I use permethrin. Repeat weekly treatments for 3 or 4 weeks are a must as it does not kill the mites eggs but will as they hatch out. I thoroughly spray everywhere in the coops, every crack and crevice where the mites can hide. From your description it appears you have the type that live in the coops. If you have access to permethrin here is the ratios for mixing the concentrate if available. Sometimes it comes premixed. I don't use DE (Diatomaceous earth) because I never had any luck with it. I do use poultry dust that has permethrin in it in the nest boxes. I use the 0.50% solution. Good luck...

Total Mite Kill contains permethrin insecticides for rapid knockdown, and is also a multi-purpose cleaner. Contains: Permethrin 2.3%, Tetramethrin 0.23%, Benzalkonium chloride. Do not spray on birds or animals, avoid contact with skin.

Could I use this inside my incubator. I bought quail eggs home and added to my brinsea 3 days ago ( I already had hens eggs set in which were on day 5). I noticed last night there several mites crawling around the inside and a couple on the outside of my bator - which i've squished as ive seen them - killed 2 more this morning. I'm assuming the quail eggs I added a couple day's ago had mite eggs on them and they've since hatched inside my bator. What do I do....I certainly don't want them invading my home and I don't want the chicks to hatch and immediately be infected and I also don't want the babies I already have in the Brooder to pick them up either (a few of them a due to start going outside in the next week or 2.

Can I use this spray inside my brinsea if i take the eggs out briefly to clean, before adding them back in?

I had a Northern Fowl mite infestation.

I now use sulphur in their dust baths and I hang a ladies laundry underwear bag with sulphur, refreshed constainly, so that the birds have to duck to get through their pop door. From my watching most times they evade contact but the sulphur keeps disappearing and I do not have mites. Cheap insurance.

Persistence, multi pronged attack vectors are your friends.

Good luck.
