We recently had to put down our two remaining hens. Our girls all meant the world to me, and I miss them so much already. I don't know if anyone will ever read this, but I just wanted to memorialize all five of our sweet girls who are now gone.
We lost our first one to Mareks 3 years ago when she was just 1.5 years old. We later lost the second to ovarian/lung cancer and the third to avian tuberculosis. We put down our last two Kitka and Pancake this weekend because of the nature of avian tb. I am so heartbroken and miss them so much. We won't be getting new birds because the avian tb can live in the soil for years.
If anyone reads this, thank you so much for thinking of our sweet chickens.
Henriette the porcelain d'uccle was our sweet little dove and loved to coo and be picked up. Her best friend was Jasmine. She liked when I wore grey polka dot pajama pants that matched her feathers. She liked to fly across the yard.
Jasmine the lavender orpington was the momma bird of the flock. She was a gentle fluffy cloud gliding over the lawn. She always watched out for her sisters even at the end of her life. She had the prettiest song.
Poro was a white cochin and a ball of fluff. She loved to run out of the coop and run, jump into the open egg hatch over and over again. It was like a fun game to her and it always made us crack up laughing.
Pancake was a salmon faverolles and was our sweet derpy girl. She loved to come in and chatter to me every time I cleaned out the coop. I called it the morning report. When Poro was sick, Pancake laid by her and stayed by her side all the time to make sure she was okay and so she didn't feel alone. Pancake had little black heart shapes at the tips of her head feathers, and she had cute feathers under her beak that made it look like she had puffy cheeks. She loved dust bathing. One time she flew into our dog and bumped her on the head.
Kitka was our sweet buff silkie hen. She was very attached to us because we had to hand-feed her when she was a chick due to wry neck. She would call and get our attention if the chicks ever needed anything, and loved to make curious little noises when she saw something new. When she discovered how to drink water as a chick or when she was sunbathing, she would trill happily. She liked it when I wore my coat with a fluffy head because I looked like a silkie too. At night, she would also be the last to go in for bed and she and I would stay out together under the stars as she free-roamed. She was often broody and I felt connected to her because I want to be a momma too, just like she wanted to be. As she passed, I rocked her and wore my hooded furry coat that she liked so I matched her fluffy head. I hope that brought her comfort.
