Chickin Fairy
Songster
I rescued 4 birds (2 hens and 2 roos) from a neglect situation. All were free-ranging in soggy winter weather (the UP of Michigan). I'll lay out the information I know below and attach pictures for reference.
1) Breed: Ayam Cemani and Australorp mixes; roughly 2 years old; normal weight
2) Behavior is normal, eating and drinking normally, dust bathing, scratching, mating
3) Unsure how long they have been dealing with this, but possibly 6 months to a year. I picked them up on Saturday, April 5th and began home-trewtment Monday, April 7th.
4) All 4 birds have scaley legs and slightly ashy tones to their combs. 2 of them have white blotches on their combs.
5) No bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
6) The birds were free-ranging in soggy, cold conditions. I'm sure their coop had not been cleaned in probably a year or so.
7) I'm feeding them a balanced layer feed, drinking water (plain), some treats like celery tops, green pepper, scrambled eggs with herbs, mealworms (not more than 10% of their overall diet).
8) Poops look good. One hen had runny poops when I first got her, but they are looking more normal now.
9) I have treated them all twice (Monday and Thursday) with a 10 minute leg soak in Epsom Salt bath and 10 minute leg soak in vegetable oil. I have also administered Vetericyn spray to pecking injuries and applied Vaseline to their combs. I have sprayed their coop and roosting bar down with a peremethian-based spray (to only be applied every 2 weeks). I added DE and Sweet PDZ to the litter as well as to sprinkle DE to their outdoor run.
10 ) I would like to treat these completely myself, until a sanctuary can take 3 of the 4 birds.
11) They are quarantined in a coop and run away from my main flock. I use pine shavings for bedding. The floor of the run is dirt. They have access to an indoor and outdoor roosting bar, they have been roosting in the coop at night and I close the door to the coop each night.
