Hi All!

Well I said I would NEVER have a silkie (or any other "designer birds") but I just couldn't turn this girl down. I picked her up at the local rescue about a month ago, she was there because she was found to be "ugly" and had never laid. She is a young bird, I was told she hatched last spring, all black. She took to me, and I figured all black and a bit odd looking, I had to take her. Kind of like black cats have a hard time finding new homes. She is some kind of mostly silky barnyard mix, she does have a naked face but silkie feathers, feather feet, silkie size. I personally find her incredible cute and her personality is outstandingly sweet- definitely a pet, eggs or not. She seems happy and healthy, good organic layer feed fermented, lots of mealworms and now the bugs are starting to come. So protein is not an issue. But that comb is clearly not red. I mean I am willing to be patient- I am keeping her either way, but my question is, are there some birds that with whatever genes they got who are sterile/don't ever lay? I don't think given her personality she was ever abused, just shoved into rescue by some heartless person who wanted pretty birds. I was told she arrived at rescue well fed in good feather with no adjustment troubles, the only complaint was no eggs and ugly. I don't see the ugly at all, she is cute and such a cuddle bug. No eggs, well I already get too many eggs and give regular to the local food bank. So that is not any issue for me. OK, so chicken math is real!

Can you post a picture?

Is it possible "she" is a "he?" A lot of people have to get rid of roosters because they can't have them where they live.
