My Rhode Island Red Sugar is about 2.5 years old. She was a consistent layer of perfect eggs up until this year.
About 6 months ago she started laying very odd shaped eggs. They would be huge and lumpy shaped (not perfectly oval) or sometimes with a wrinkle in the shell or a complete soft shell. Mostly I would notice they are very large and odd shapen. Never a normal egg the past 6 months.
Today I caught her in the run walking around in the penguin pose like she was trying to lay. I could tell she was having a hard time and the vent was a bit prolapsed. I brought her in and gave an epsom salt bath and after about 20 minutes she passed the egg in the bath.
I've attached a photo of the egg she just laid and a couple photos of eggs from the past few months. I photographed it next to a normal size egg as well. Is this just needing more calcium or is this an underlying reproductive issue that needs a vet's attention? How should I proceed?
I also thought I would mention that she seems to have lost some weight over the last few months and we have been battling scaley leg mites this year (but I think we have gotten the mites under control) Any thoughts on beefing her up would be helpful too. Maybe she's eating too many treats and not enough feed? All my other chickens seem fine btw.
Thank you as always for your help BYC community!
