We just expanded our run. We live in Northern Wi. So we have heavy snowfall and cold temps in the winter. Im looking for ideas or ways to attach a roof to the run. Im thinking a metal roof. At least over the majority of the run is necessary. Anybody have ideas or pictures of how to go about this. I kinda got a idea but in put from you guys would be appreciated. Thanks☺

Last year we had a tarp over the roof which was held up by a arch structure. We had to be extremely diligent to remove the snow right away, or else it would collapse.

This year we’re going with either a metal roof or a plexi glass one.

Yea if we get the amount of snow and rain we did last year, a tarp.just wont cut it lol. We have had more rain this year then last by about 10 inchs right now. When our run was smaller we tarped it. Was constantly pushing rain out of the pockets were the tarp settled. Lots of cold showers in the morning. So metal with some clear panels miced in is what im thinking.

Absolutely, we live in upstate NY, and it feels like the winters get harsher every year!

I am guessing that the metal posts on the dog kennel simply will not be strong enough to use as roof posts...

So...

You need to put in posts, either on the outside of the dog kennel, or the inside... and use the new posts as the roof support.

Remember the steeper the roof the less beefy you need the posts and framing to be(since snow will slide off), a lower pitch means it will have to hold the snow, which can get crazy heavy fast... so beefier all over will be needed.

Clear panels are great, but not as strong as metal, and obviously can't have plywood under them to help support them...so STEEPER if you are using plastic/fiberglass/whatever clear-ish stuff panels.

Give dimensions and post pics of run.

What's your idea?
My run is 13 x 15 the back runs 23 ft and attachs to a 9 ft sevtion extrnding from the coop. If that makes senseo you lol. Obviously im thinking some type of header on the front sloping to the rear of the pen, then just resting on the back fence. Another problem is my run is not the same depth all the way down the back. It goes from. 15ft wide to 23. At 1 point. Ill try to get some pics tommorow. Supposed to be a nice day for a change

then just resting on the back fence.
Unless the posts are stronger than the normal metal posts on a dog kennel... I severely doubt that will hold.

One nice thing about using new posts, is it doesn't matter if your fence/ pen is oddly sized. Just sink the posts where you want roof cover.

This is what I did for my 6 foot high 10 foot long dog run chain link panel pens to support the hardware wire roofs covered with shade cloth.

The panels of the pens are connected with these pipe clamps.

To support the hardware wire, I used PVC pipe the same diameter as the panel pipe.
These were connected to the top pipe using connectors that look like these. This connector allows you to make a T . The clamp can be adjusted to different angles.

While my tops are flat, a steel fence pipe could be used to run a peak line and lengths can be cut to make your "rafters"

I purchased all my hardware ... Clamps in the fencing section of my Ace Hardware store. They also had the lengths of pipe.

Do you think it will be strong enough if we add extra vertical lengths of post in the fence panels?
