What would cause this? One of my roosters started crowing around 4am and would not stop. I checked the coop fearing a predator but nothing. They are approx 17 wks old and been crowing and behaving very much like roosters for a while now but never before sunrise. I need to fix this for myself and people miles around )

Could there be a light on somewhere that's shining into the coop? Some roosters will just do that no matter what, but if there's any light at all you can get early crowing. Mine usually wait until about 5 or 530 LOL. =)

Internal biological clock. Whether is exposed to natural photoperiod or held in complete darkness it will go through bouts of pre-dawn crowing. Other roosters crowing in distance with increase crowing effort. The biological clock tends to drift a little each day so it is reset by exposure to natural photoperiod. True sunglight seems to overlap artificial lighting when birds have exposure to both. My birds crow in bouts throughout night but most folks sleep through them until just before dawn or after being disturbed by something else.

That's why I have no Roosters..I just stick with the Pullets and Hens...You may have to make Chicken and Dumplins out that one.. (just kidding).. I can't have roosters, my neighbors would start complaining since I do not live in the country.

Your neighbors would throw my butt out fast. Two thirds of my adult flock is roosters. I had to move to country side just to keep chickens and like as did growing up. All said on done, it was worth move. Makes it so I do not have mow as much.

Thank you for the info and quick responses, It has been rainy and not very sunny this weekend so maybe he just had to get it out )

At 530 AM everyday I hear my quail start to whistle then comes my roo he's non stop for about an hour. Then through out the day someones either singing the egg song are gripping that I need to let them out. The only time I really notice the calls is first thing in the morning after that I'm so use to it that I don't even pay attention unless its a distress call.

I know this is an old thread, but I found it while trying to figure out why one of my two cockerels has a broken clock. LOL

Four am. Almost like clockwork.
Exactly THREE CROWS. Then he goes right back to sleep.
Trouble is, that wakes up my other rooster, who insists on proving he’s top cock, and the neighbor’s old bird down the road…

Two hours later, we get a little natural light and EVERYONE starts announcing its a new day and “we all want out and away from these screaming boys!”

That is the problem with multiple roosters. Once one starts it becomes competitive, especially in the dark as the submissive rooster is safe from any repercussions that the dominant rooster would normally dish out for crowing in his presence.
I don't know what your lay out is like but could it be a car's head lamps sweeping across the coop at that time, as it comes along the road, perhaps someone heading out to do an early shift on a regular basis.
