Rooster crows all day!

My 7 month old Light Sussex rooster crows all day long! Is there any particular reason for this or has anyone found that they have the same thing?
I had googled it and the answers I got pretty much were:

a) he is talking to his girls
b) he is threatened by something
c) he is in pain (??)
d) because he wants to - (obviously very helpful )!

We are usually at work during the day, but I noticed this weekend that he first crows at about 6am, then at 10am, then 1pm, then at 4pm, then at 6pm!

I'm fairly sure he has scaly leg mites (which I have treated with vaseline and then vegetable oil 2 days ago) - perhaps he is itchy and crowing about that??

I know it isn't helpful, but it probably IS just because he wants to. My neighbor's rooster crowed all day long, all hours of the day, even at night sometimes. I'll be sitting out having my morning coffee and cockadoodledoo, I'll be watching my chickens free range at noon and cockadoodledoo, I'll be weeding the garden at dusk and cockadoodledoo, I'll be having a bonfire when it's dark out and there it is again.

My neighbors eventually got rid of it. I say treat the mites and see if he stops. But, if he doesn't then I think he is just lovin' the sound of his own voice.

I don't think that's terribly unusual. My Buff Orpington rooster will crow at all hours. He does the majority of his crowing early morning, but periodically crows throughout the day and will even crow late at night if he hears people outside his coop - in his case people talking or being out in the field with him tends to make him more vocal, but I think he does just like the sound of his own voice.

Your boy could be crowing for the ladies, but I wouldn't say most roosters crow when they feel threatened - at least for my boy, his vocalizations when he thinks he's threatened (hawks, cats and the like) are completely different than his crowing. My boy has also been routinely checked for parasites and the like so I know he's in good health. So I'd have to vote for 'D'. There are a lot of other roosters in my area and I also hear them crowing throughout the day.

While treating for leg mites is definitely a good thing, especially since your boy is so young I imagine he's just wanting to let everyone know how awesome he is

This isn't unusual at all. I have had many roosters, up to four at a time, and they crow all day every day. I do find that my boys tend to crow more when they are young, and more when there are other roosters around. I think they mostly crow because they like to remind the world how manly and awesome they are.

I thought I might have heard a rooster crowing in the distance too, and I know they can have crow-offs
Good thing I like the sound of him crowing! Feel very proud of him for some reason!

On the subject of the leg mites - they don't seem to be going away! Have smothered them in vaseline twice last week and then scrubbed with oil and a toothbrush at the weekend but it doesn't seem to have made a difference! The 2 girls have them now as well. Grr

Sevin dust will get rid of them very quickly. It's the pesticide Carbaryl mixed with DE as a carrier, and is actually labeled for use on poultry. Not organic, but it seems you've tried other remedies and they aren't working.

You definitely have it--apparently it underwent review in 2006 and the Australian government decided if the labeling was correct, etc. They decided that it would still be approved as a dusting powder for poultry. Interesting reading, but focus on page 17. http://www.apvma.gov.au/products/review/docs/carbaryl_review_finding_April06.pdf

It says that there is a product called Keydust Dusting Powder specifically approved for use on poultry--but I would think that any dust that has only Carbaryl as an active ingredient (and no other active ingredients) would work. Here in the US, you can buy Sevin Dust tons of places, from big box stores to hardware stores.

Oh I thought the dusting powder was just for their bodies - didn't think it would work on their feet!
