It was fairly cold, so it could be frost bite? I thought it was weird though that it only happened to himWas it super cold over the winter?
I think that is most likely. What are the dimensions of their roosting bar? It could be that he couldn't cover his feet with his belly feathers at night. It was fairly cold, so it could be frost bite? I thought it was weird though that it only happened to him
It is a couple inches, they have a couple wooden roost bars. I hadn't thought about that, how big should the bars usually be?I think that is most likely. What are the dimensions of their roosting bar? It could be that he couldn't cover his feet with his belly feathers at night.
A 2x4 placed wide side up is recommended in cold climates. The flat 3.5" surface helps them keep their toes underneath them. It also needs to be long enough so every chicken on the roost can lie down.It is a couple inches, they have a couple wooden roost bars. Ok gotcha. It is long enough for all of them, but I will definitely look into getting them a wider roost! Thank you for your help!A 2x4 placed wide side up is recommended in cold climates. Metal roosting bars will do this too.I'm surprised he's able to walk.Did you not notice anything different back in the winter when he lost them? They usually turn blue and black before they fall offOk gotcha. So you're saying they don't have any signs their toes just fall off? Wow!I don’t know if the wider roosts help, I too have had chicken just show up with shortened toes like that. I really never noticed them being black, or limping. The good news is it never seemed to effect their walk or roosting.
Mine have a wide roost and when they sit down their feet are covered.
