My beautiful rooster (now on a plate) tried to kill my Peking pet duck about 4 days ago, He was not trying to mate with her he was trying to kill her, pecking at her head and eyes until we discovered what was happening and stopped him. She laid lifeless on the ground and we thought she was dead. I heald her for a while and she seemed to come back around and although the injuries were serious I believed that she would be fine. The next day the rooster got her again (the last time) the same thing pecking at her head and eyes.
She has quite a nasty injury to her head but i cant tell how deep it is the blood has dried and looks black (She objected to me touching the wound to much but I cleaned what i could). My/her problem now is that she has started having trouble walking and she cant get in or out of her pool. I am afraid that she may have an infection or brain damage. Her eye is clearing up only after foaming up for a day and she is drinking and eating a little bit but seems like she is spitting some of it out. There are no vets that see birds in my area so I am hoping that someone can give some advice. so far I have only done a minor cleaning no peroxide or anything but water because I could not tell how deep it was. I just gave her sugar water, she is pooping watery with lots of grass pieces in it. Her legs seem to be fine not broken, She just can't make her foot flatten out. I have amoxicillin and several other antibiotics (in pill form) peroxide iodine Neosporin available. Thank you in advance for any help at all

I would give her time and see how she heals. Could be brain damage or even eye injuries and she can't see well. You can take her to a vet to see if they suggest anything, otherwise time is what she needs. Good thing you got rid of that rooster.

@Ravynscroft @WVduckchick @Miss Lydia ?

@allison l perrin I'm sorry to hear about your duck. Hopefully the others with more duck knowledge than I will chime in.

If you have photos of her injuries that would be good. General wound care would be to flush the wounds with saline, diluted betadine or warm soapy water. Since the eye(s) are involved, Saline would be a better choice (gently flush out the eye since it was foamy). Clean out the wounds of any debris and feathers so you can get a good look at them. Apply a triple antibiotic ointment or vetericyn to the wounds. If you notice any hot/inflamed skin or odors, then you are dealing with infection and antibiotics would be in order.

Time does help with injuries - the not being able to walk could very well be brain or nerve damage. Do you best to keep her hydrated - add some vitamins to her water. Hydration first, food next.

btw- we are glad you're here - Welcome To BYC

Get her isolated and inside... either in the tub or a crate to keep her in a darkened, quiet room... shock can affect them as well as injuries... do not use peroxide, it can damage healthy tissue as well as bad... clean all wounds well and flush her eyes out... keep her warm(not super warm, but room temp), out of water and away from other birds...

Pics would help us help you... hydration is most important, but if she needs help eating @casportpony has a great thread on tube feeding...
