Hi, I just noticed one of my year old white orpingtons has horrid looking raised scales on her feet. I've soaked her feet in epsom saltwater and applied VetRX oil, getting it deep under the scales. I did this three days ago and again just now. Is it possible this is something other than scaly let mites, like some genetic anomaly?? The other 11 chickens look great, although I've treated them too. I've gotten great experienced advice from all of you in the past...thankyou!

That looks like a really bad case of SLM. I would use vaseline and slather it good all over her feet and legs. Do that every other day for three times, then repeat this whole thing in 10 days.

It can take months for them to heal so you won't see any changes for at least a few weeks.

Since you have other chickens, they may have it too, just to a lesser extent.

Thank you Debbie292d.....I will do that. What do you think of Ivermectin applied to her skin as a secondary systemic treatment?

A mixture of Betadine and Vaseline 25% to 75% works well.
You are unlikely to notice much improvement until the chicken sheds the lifted scales and regrows new ones. It's in this regrowth period one should maintain the legs.
Don't use Ivermectin.
For maintainance this seems to work well assuming you can find it where you are.

Our silkies have had SLM three times in over 8 years. The first two times we went in at night and slathered their feet and legs with vaseline with some A&D Diaper Rash ointment in it. We did that every other day for three times, then repeated it 10 days later. That was when we only had about 8 birds.

When we increased to around 20 birds and they got them again, we bought the Ivermectin 5mg Pour On as that would be easier than slathering 40 feet.

For silkies, the dosage I found here: on the Bitchin' Chickens site was 1 drop on the back of the neck, repeat in 10 days. They have the weight there, but for larger chickens I'd just do two drops. They caution about OD, so if you want to go more than that, I'd do the math.
