I have an interest in sex link chickens. One link is love to know if it works in a RIR rooster x cuxkoo Brahmas and has anyone tried this. I thought the roosters might make a nice table bird. I know it won’t be a super high egg prouction bird but thought the RIR might increase that. Anyone done this? Also I know a dark Brahma is theoretically a silver gene bird but would hens with a rir rooster make a sex linked bird?

For a first generation black sexlink, you need a red based rooster and a barred/cuckoo hen. It is best if you use a black based barred as lighter barreds can work, but if it is too light a base, it's hard to see the white head dot (been there, done that)....it means a lot of squinting.

With the cuckoo Brahma, you've got a nice black base for the, what I call, sloppy barring, or cuckoo, which is actually fast feather growth that musses with the line up of the white. While the RIR is not known for "slow" feather growth, it is slower, and you might actually have hit on a possible feather growth sexing for the chicks as well.

A Brahma over a RIR would make a nice table bird/dual I should think. You typically get halfway between the two for meat and laying.

Good luck on your hybrids. I think you'll be happy.
