Talked with a farmer the other day and he said some people can sex a bird by holding upside down. He said if they try to upright theirselves their a rooster. If they are relaxed and not flapping around their a hen. My question is how accurate of a method is this? Don't want to sell off hens thinking it's a rooster.

We did old wives tales experiment. There was the one you mentioned the scruff of the neck (if they hold their legs up hen straight down roo) holding them on their backs (if they lay still hen kick and right themselves roo) and the needle dangle. We used straight runs then did our pullets. They all average about the same so my guess would be its not that reliable. But you never know maybe our pullets really are roos sexing is tricky.

Old wive's tale. The only tried and true method I know of is to wait until the chicks are old enough (four to six weeks, depending on the breed) for the secondary sex characteristics to show up.
