hello everyone. itsasmallfarm here.

got a question for anyone who deals with sheep. right now am thinking about getting into sheep raising for meat, but after reading my sheep book and research online, found out about sheep's milk.

read that there milk makes really good cheese. now am going to be honest am lactose intolerant and i love cheese but it makes me sick and am not a big fan of goat cheese. does anyone here deal with sheep milk or cheese making? heard that a lot of people like me can eat goat and sheep cheese with out getting sick.

any thoughts on this would be awesome

thank you itsasmallfarm out.

Can you find some locally for sale to try? Decades ago we talked about switching from milking cows to milking sheep, but never did. These days there's too much cows milk for the demand, so sheep or goats would probably be more profitable, or at least easier. I personally am happier not milking anything these days.

i have tried seems no one sells sheep or goats milk (tired looking for goats milk a few months ago and nothing) :)

I use to raise Finnsheep. And a lot of them were for milking. I was always told they were good milkers, high butter fat. There is a farm near me that milk Katahdins.

I have raised a ton of sheep.. never thought of using their milk. I have only milked them enough to know they had milk for their lambs.

I love sheep. But after years of owning hundreds of them.., I doubt I could drink the milk.. everything about sheep has that lanolin sheep smell..one I remember needing to get away from when I came into the house. It stuck to everything, clothes, gloves. Hands and me.. I cannot believe their milk would not stink too...
Btw I like @oldhenlikesdogs am very happy to not be milking anything, growing up on a small dairy farm in the 50’s and 60’s will do that to a person.

Got sheep here. I wish we didn’t.
We’ve made cheese from sheep milk. Wish we hadn’t.
Had lambs go to slaughter at three months. Wish they didn’t.
Been knocked down by the Ram lots. Wish I hadn’t.
Sheep need shepherding. Wish they didn’t.
Shepherds need sheep dogs. Got sofa loungers.
The sheep get mastitis and can’t feed their lambs. This means bottle feeding. Sure it’s cute once in a while. 4 times a day, not so cute.
The sheep here are mountain sheep. Any precarious and unstable slope they’re on it, that is until the slope gives way and you find your terraces are being constantly eroded.
I could go on and on but in essence if I got sheep in the future then have me put down.
