This is my first time posting and first time having chickens. I have 4 Barred Rocks, 10 months old. Sunday we came home around noon and let them out to range in the backyard for a bit. One hen - Maybelene, was not acting as usual. She had a lot of poop on her fluff. I picked her up and saw a shelless empty case hanging out of her vent along with the poop. Took her in and gently pulled it out but a small bit broke off and went back in. Cleaned her up a bit. Got most of a tums down her. Put her in a wire crate in a warm room. Put water in and some crumble mash. She did not want either.

Behavior: Standing, vent pulsing, tail down, no vocals, usually loud. Kept checking her, gave her more tum tablet. Still no eating. Gave her amoxicillin 250mg.

She seemed to relax after a few hours, pooped and it looked normal. She was standing for a while then sat down. Seemed tired and closing eyes. Covered the crate at night. Next morning, she had pooped a lot, white gooey with some, not a lot water. She drank a little bit. Put Nutradense in water. Scrambled an egg , mash and crumbled part of a tums, and a few mealworms to tempt her to eat. She picked at it, not eating much. Standing, and sitting, alert. Took her outside to see if any normal behavior and she just halfheartedly pecks and somewhat scratched. Had to take the dogs to vet so I asked him about the issue. He said that he could not do anything better than what I was doing.

Tuesday: Still pooping what looks like normal and also gooey white poop. Still not acting her normal enthusiastic self, and not eating much. Outside still same behavior, the other 3 did not peck at her and she wasn't staying around them much. Not enthusiastic pecking and scratching. Went to feed the others their plate and she jumped up on the bin while I was fixing it and followed the others into the run. I put it down and while she was interested it was not long, and did not eat much. She usually stays and pecks it with the others till most of it is eaten. She instead jumped up on the branch perch. I left her in to see how she was and after a couple of hours she was still there. I brought back in. Fed her again, she drank some and picked at the egg/mash. Tail up, not lethargic but not acting normal. Still no normal vocals. She usually is loud and "growls" when she wants out/and food/treats. No egg, shelless or otherwise. No discharge, just poop.

Wed. today around noon: Same appetite, drinking. Still soft vocals. Tail up. Pooping white gooey and some normal. Took her outside. Halfheartedly pecked and scratched. Did eat green grass shoots a bit. Interacted with others a bit, she is #2 and gave the eye and soft peck at #3 &4. After about 15 min, she came and sat by me, closing her eyes, not normal, she never does this, usually on the move pecking and scratching. She then, while sitting, did what I have observed them all doing in the nest, as pecking lightly and pulling nest material to them. She sat for a few minutes more then got up and was a tad bit more perky, not much, but noticeable. She drank some out of the yard water bowl, twice. She followed into the run and ate just a bit again. And, again, jumped on the branch/perches, stood for a bit and sat. The others did as well, it is a cloudy dismal day.

Brought her back in and took attached pictures. Am I doing correctly, and what could it be still causing her to feel badly and pooping the gooey white poop (see pics). As of this time, no egg. Thank you. I have a short video, how do I upload it if allowed. Thank you.

EDIT TO ADD new picture of most recent white poop different in consistency and water amount @1 pm

You are doing everything right. Such cases are common. I usually go heavy with calcium and vitamins and if nothing changes in a few days I add antibiotics.

I'd recommend giving her more calcium. It helps with contractions and expelling material.

Pooping is good. The white goop is good as well, she is cleaning herself up. Eating is good as well, even if it's in small amounts. She won't need as much food while she is not producing eggs.

Anyway, good job so far. I recommend more calcium and poultry vitamins if you have them.

Thank you. I posted that last pic of the change in poop, and now @2:15 she is standing but tail is down when earlier it was up. I will give her another tum tablet.

Continue with the TUMS as suggested, but if possible, get a bottle of Calcium Citrate+D3. Give her 1 tablet daily for at least a week.

Hopefully she will be able to expel the membrane that broke off. It sounds like she may be having a hard time laying another egg - the calcium can help with this.

Encourage her to drink well and stay hydrated. Normal feed is fine. Tidbits of egg, fish or meat can be offered to entice her to eat a bit.

Amoxicillin should be given 2X a day for 7-10 days.

UPDATE: Thursday 12/26 - this morning she was up and had more normal like vocals. I gave her a heaping tablespoon of wet crumbles. She started eating right away and at it all. She was wanting to get out of the crate so I took her out in the yard and let the other 3 out with her. She went straight to scratching and pecking with more enthusiasm than she has. #1 hen yesterday would come and peck by her and give soft vocals. Today, she came up to her and pecked her on the neck, several times until she yelped, then she didn't anymore.

After that Maybelene vigorously went to dust bathing, and then went to excavating the compost heap. She seemed almost 100% normal. After a while put them in the run and fed them, she joined in and seemed hungry. Sat and watched her making sure she was not picked on and ok back in the run/flock. She explored the run and coop. After a while she preened, and sat in the dust bath tub, taking a nap, she must have been tired and still getting her strength back I would think. Went back after an hour or so to check on her and she was sitting in the corner of the run and I shook the worm can and she came running with the others. I gathered all the eggs from the others, so any egg would be hers. None yet. It looks like she is much better today and integrating back into the flock, so far. Will keep checking on her and make sure and for any egg, shelless or otherwise. Thanks again.
