Hey all! Thanks in advance for any help. So it's starting to get cold around here. Like 20s at night. One of my hens crest fathers all melted and the new feathers just will not break through the keratin sheathed at all. To the point where her head isn't being protected at all I feel like. Now the feathers have been like this for about 2 weeks now. I feel like its time for intervention. Am I wrong? I have read both sides online. Some say chickens don't do well having human intervention to break the sheaths. I know parrots love it though. What do you guys think should I help her? Or leave it be. You can see it's pretty bad lol.

All chickens are individuals..

If she would tolerate it well without being too stressed.. then I would help.

Other locations the hen may be able to preen them off herself. The crest seems most likely to need scratching or some other form of manipulation.. pinching between your fingernails, etc.

If she is less tolerant and you would still like to do it, then maybe hold her in one arm and tuck her face towards your armpit where she feels more protected as you work with the other hand to help the sheeths break free. Obviously pay attention and be aware of any that are still coming in and may be more sensitive or cause more discomfort by your handling. But with a little caution.. I'd probably at least try.

I will state that since most birds are not crested.. I kinda doubt that the cold weather is really too much of an issue. But I COULD see them possibly being a bit uncomfortable (or pokey) still in that condition. Use YOUR best judgement!

I would offer to help her; if she wants it, she'll stay put once she realizes what you are up to, if she doesn't, she'll let you know one way or another.

I had a sick roo that I helped in this way. He stood still for ages to let me do so.
