My duck, Amelia, started having problems standing three days ago. She was able to stand but could not walk. She has pain medication due to arthritis. I gave her the pain medication and added some nutritional yeast via capsules I filled. Yesterday she was eating normal. I gave her a bath in epson salts. She loved it but was having trouble keeping herself upright. I noticed she seems to be having small short seizures. I fed her mealworms late last night. I generally get up a couple of times during the night to let her go poops but she hasn’t gone in about 12 hours. She is an indoor duck for the past three years since one of my neighbors called animal control and I can no longer let her outside. She is my only pet. She eats mealworms, occasionally she eats earth worms, millet mixed with poultry and game high protein food and a duck and gosling starter mix, oatmeal, coconut. She is very finicky and will not eat anything I add to her water or dry food. Today I added sav-A-chick electrolyte to her water but she will not drink it. I bought unflavored Pedialyte which she will drink.
This same problem(walking issue) occurred several months ago and we took her to the vet. It was suggested that we add the poultry feed to the millet because she may not be getting enough nutrients. She is 15 and we have never had this problem before with her regular diet but of course I added the high protein to her dry food. I have noticed she does not eat as much dry food since I added it to her plain millet. She has an endless supply of mealworms. She eat lettuce at times but not a lot.
She has always had a problem molting her flight feathers. She did a full mold of every feather on her body many years ago. I thought she was dying and rushed her to the vet but nothing was wrong. Since then she has molted but not drastic. Currently, she has not molted her flight feathers in a long time and they look like bare quills.
Amelia was rescued as a ducking just a few days old when she was dumped at a local park/lake. I have always wondered if she may not have had the bet incubation and this is why she has a molting issue. We take her to a park far away from our home a couple of times a week so she gets sun but I’m wondering if she needs something added to her diet since she is not getting the sun and outdoor activity she used to get.
The only other thing I can think of that might be causing this issue is I have had to put brown paper on my windows so the neighbors do not see her in my home. She does not get the normal sunlight pouring in through the windows. I understand this is not the best situation for her but I do not want to re-home her because of one idiot neighbor. She has never been an issue as she stayed in our garage or backyard. The kids in the neighborhood loved her. We are dealing with a male Karen.
