We have two ducks, a Black Cayuga and an Indiana Runner. They just turned 3 years old and today I noticed the Indian Runner, Maisy, acting stranger than usual. He started acting like he was chasing his tail, like a dog runs in circles chasing his.. They usually spin in circles while playing in their pool, but this was much different. It was as if something was happening to his foot or side and would spin around pecking at his side/foot in circles. Or, as if he was trippin! not tripping, TRIPPIN:eek:. We checked his feet, and they look great, nothing is effecting his walk and it doesn't appear any feathers are wedged in the wrong place.

After further inspection, I noticed his right wing has a greenish discoloration, that has never been there before. Other than the circles (I've only witnessed this 3 times) and greenish coloring on his wing, he is acting completely normal, eating well, bathing, preening, sleeping etc.
Has anyone else dealt with this before? Or have any advise?
Thanks!

You need the video on youtube or vimeo and then paste a link, think there are instructions in the FAQ section if you scroll down to the bottom of the page if you need help.

As for his 'symptoms' I have no idea, sorry
Could he have got to somewhere new and eaten something that he shouldn't have? I have heard certain plants can have a narcotic affect on rabbits (and possibly dogs). I shouldn't laugh at his funny turns but I'm imaging the green on his wings like a kids with chocolate round their mouth as their downfall when they've helped themselves to something they weren't supposed to have ;)

Thanks for your help! I got the video up :)
It's pretty silly looking, but being "my babies" I am fearful for anything bad happening to them.

Oh I totally understand that! My boy has just recently started freaking out when I empty the water trough like he's trying to attack the dirty water as it pours out, and I can't help but worry there's something wrong and not just him being daft!

Hmm, interesting.... wasn't quite as dramatic as I was expecting, don't know why! Maybe that's a good thing tho as I'm not sure I can be much help! Does it only happen on the grass? To me it looks like something might have bitten his foot maybe, like an ant or something. I think if it was mites or something like that then you'd notice scratching or whatever they do more regularly but might be worth just ruling that out.
If my 3 year old suddenly started acting like that, and I do see my ducks at least as feathery toddlers the way they behave sometimes, then I would think she'd been bitten or stung by something in the grass, not sure what bugs you have where you are but maybe they are attracted to his bright orange feet and that's why they aren't bothering your Cayuga

Update: We took Mr. Maisy to the vet because the odd behavior seemed to get worse. Upon first inspection, the Vet said he was very healthy, but his right leg seemed to be a bit tougher than the other. We took an X-Ray and found he has either an enlarged Kidney or Reproductive Gland, its nearly impossible to tell without surgery. The spinning seems to be from nerve pain in his right side. We got some anti inflammatory medication that should help the discomfort, and we are to continue to observe his behaviors.

We are not very interested in surgery, as it would require a 3.5 hour drive (round trip) and he really doesn't take well to traveling. We love our little duck and hope the medication helps him.

On another note, has anyone experimented with CBD for Ducks? I know CBD can be very beneficial for pets with tumors, aches and pains, anxiety, etc. But I haven't found much for ducks.

Oh I'm glad you got him checked then, poor thing :(
Weirdly I have just been reading something about gout in ducks (was looking for duckling starter and wondered why the ingredients listed sodium bicarbonate, couldn't find what the purpose of it being there was but this page mentioned high levels in feed being a contributor to kidney stones)
What are you feeding them? Maybe there are some dietary changes you could make to at least give the meds a better chance of helping (not saying you're feeding them anything wrong, just worth looking into it)

Hello...Ducks are bred for either meat or eggs..Then ornamental as in Calls. Issues arise in all breeds though. Most were not bred for longevity.
Some will love years as others develop issues at a young age. Going through that with Chickens..

I was also reading into Kidney issues in ducks today, and we've been currently feeding them Layer pellets, which can cause calcium build up. We previously were feeding them grower pellets, but was fearful it wasn't providing as much nutrition as the layer does, and one of our ducks is very large, we were actually recommend to get layer pellets again.
We are switching back to grower pellets and are going to try and feed him as many healthy options for the kidneys we can find. This article was pretty interesting, https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http...krdaPCmRkU9GSUz2uHO3qn_Alzuph13RP8bsFXkJecu-g
it goes into detail about gout, kidney and retinal failures in birds.
