Hello! First time chicken owners here. We picked up our first six at TSC the other day (unplanned, but they had silkies which are my daughter’s dream chickens), plus we have a hatchery order coming this week. We know the breed/genders on the hatchery order, but wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to these guys (I know they are notoriously hard to sex and any “guesses” right now are just that). We have five silkies and one random chick from the bantam bin (had to meet the six chick minimum). Luckily we have a friend who can take any excess roos.

Thoughts on the silkies’ sex and the possible breed of the last guy? Looking at pictures online, I’m guessing the silkies are maybe around 1.5-2 weeks old (we’ve had them for five days), and perhaps the grey one is a bit younger? It’s the same size as the others, but is still all fluff.

My guesses based on reading stuff online:

1.) pullet
2.) pullet
3.) cockrel
4.) pullet
5.) cockrel?
6.) old English game bantam?

It's still to early to sex the silkies. The 6th chick looks like a sapphire gem to me. Update in 8 weeks.

Hi. I have three silkies and bought them around a few weeks old and seller assured me they were hens. I was slightly skeptical but at four months old I’m realizing he’s probably 100% correct. Definitely won’t know for sure until they lay eggs. Something he told me that differentiated a pullet from roo was that roos tend to stand more upright and pullets more horizontal. I hope that helps😊

Seller can’t guarantee anything at a few weeks old, especially not in Silkies. I hope he didn’t try to vent sex some Silkie chicks…

If I were you, I would make a thread for your own birds. We can sex them for you. They are old enough :)

Too young to sex. I agree with Fluffy.

Thank you. I actually have posted already and people agreed pullets at 4 months🙂 I do not think he vent sexed them. He just based his prediction off of posture alone as a chick. Here are some pics!
