I just bought some Silver Laced Cochin pullets but I only have solid color cochin roos (black, blue, buff and partridge). If I put the pullets with a solid color roo will I lose the lacing? Do I now need to ALSO get a Silver Laced cochin roo???

Hi Val! I can't answer your question, but wanted to tell you that the chicks are doing great! I got one black roo & one partridge- perfect! They are soooo soft, and really sweet. Thx!

Laced is mainly Parrige + Columbian +ML.If you cros them with Partrige roo you will have partialy laced(spoted) birds. If you chuse to backcros them with one of this will be 25 % laced ofspring

The best thing to do would be to cross them to the partridge rooster. That will give you sexlinks, the females will be gold and the males mostly silver. The pattern will be inbetween but if you take one of those males and mate him back to a SL cochin you should get silver birds with lacing.

If you dont want to use him you could also use a black or a blue. The blue rooster over silver laced hens would give poorly laced males and very poorly, almost solid females. You would get 1/2 black and 1/2 blue. Take the best blue laced bird and mate it back to the silver laced hens and get somewhere around 75% laced birds of black and blue laced silver. Then take the best blue laced bird again and mate him to a silver laced hen and have good blue laced silvers.

What rooster has the best type?

Blues are usually laced in the US, so you probably already have laced birds to cross with.

Partridge will get you there, but laced will probably get you there sooner.

Yes, you really ought to get a roo of the same variety so you don't have to cross to get standard colours.
