My hen had a soft egg shell coming out of her that had busted open inside of her. I needed to pull it the rest of the way out. Is there something I should be doing for her??? She is almost 5 months old.

I don't know, but am interested what others say. My hen had soft shelled eggs and I know she ate them, but not sure when they broke, inside or out.

How is your feather baby doing?
The same thing happened to one of my hens this week.
She's also 5 months old.
I had to irrigate her and give her an antibiotic.
Otherwise, they can develop Egg Yolk Perotinitis.
My girl is in the house and in a "hospital" crate now.
I'm watching her closely.
She's lethargic and her appetite is terrible.
I hope your girl is ok.
I'm very worried about mine.

My hen is doing fine now. It was a one time event and she is playfull, eating and drinking normally. There are four hens in the hen house and only getting 2 eggs per day, so I don't know who's doing the laying. I hope your hen recovers soon.

Hi @Rosieoflynn :frow Welcome To BYC

How is your pullet doing today?

Since she is only 5months old, she more than likely is still working out some laying issues.
If you haven't done so, provide your girls with oyster shell free choice for added calcium.

I have an adult that occassionally has this issue, but sometimes she will act droopy. A soft shell egg that has burst can make them feel unwell and may eventually lead to infection/reproductive disorders down the road. I usually clean her bum up if she is messy -giving her a little soak in an epsom salts bath, then offer extra calcium (TUMS) sprinkled over a little chopped egg, followed by a direct dose of poultry vitamins (Poultry Nutri-Drench - 1cc per 3lbs). Sometimes after the soak she may expel more egg matter.
.
All of this is not necessary if your pullet is bouncing back fine, though none of it will hurt her, I'm just giving you input on what you can do if it happens again and she is not doing well.

Here's a little more info on laying glitches and another method of treatment:

How is your hen doing now?

I don't know. She's molting now. Hasn't laid an egg in over a week. Dealing with croupy sounding breathing. Had her separated for a couple days, put her back with flock since she wasn't eating well alone. Giving probiotics and VetRx. No mucous, just low energy and noisy breathing.
