It’s been an unusually hot day today in Michigan. Like upper 90’s. Some of my chicks have been panting today (still very active, eating and drinking). I’ve given them water with ice several times today as well as supplying ice packs around the coop for them to lay by if they’re hot. Their coop is mostly shaded and they have places they can go for complete shade. They just cooped themselves about 20 minutes ago and I closed the door but they were all panting so I opened it again. It opens to their enclosed run. Here’s the issue, they are still fairly young (7 weeks) and prefer to sleep snuggled up on the floor. I tried to place them on the roost because I know it would be cooler but they will not stay….
Will they be okay overnight? I’m freaking out and have to be up at 445am for work 😅

Thanks so much for any input!

They should be okay. I live in Texas, weather that hot is normal, and my chickens survive.

If they are huddling together on the floor, then I would think they aren't too hot. Chicks huddle together when cold and stay distanced when they are too hot.

Laying on the floor may also be a cooler option because their bodies are pressed against cold flooring or bedding that has been shaded all day, and they can spread out more to allow more air to flow around them.

I did hear it was unusually hot today up in that area. Even just 90 is scorching for up there. 80 is a hot day, but not too hot.

Thank you!! I’m probably overreacting but it scares me.

It’s way too hot for me! I don’t know how you guys do it 😅

Oh my gosh I bet. Get a little fan and clip it to your shirt! That’s what I would be doing for sure 😅
I need an ice cold kiddie pool every couple feet so I can take a couple steps and flop around in the pools like a duck 😅

I am actually dealing with a pretty bad sun burn from working outside on closing in an acre of land to dedicate to poultry.

Rig up a fan inside the coop. Make sure the air is blowing out a vent, indirect air flow will come in through the other vents. You dont want direct air flow blowing on your birds. Shut it off in the morning when the birds go out in the pen.
You can also rig up a fan in the pen for day time use and shut it off for the night. A box fan would be best.
