Hello All and Happy New Year,
I have a 3 year old English Orp whom I just finished treating with Monistat for sour crop. She has been having wet stools for about a month. I believe the sour crop may have been present for about that long, maybe longer. It wasn't until she became very lethargic that I realized her crop was full of liquid.
I just returned her to the rest of the flock yesterday after treating her in the basement in a dog crate.
While separated (5 days) she dropped only one normal looking poop. The rest were, and continue to be, very loose and watery. Her crop seems to be back to normal. Any advice gratefully welcomed.
Thanks!

One other thing. This hen is the only one of my 3 that didn't start laying after I started supplemental light. They all had a pretty hard molt at the end of September and all 3 stopped laying until November, when I added the light. Two of them started up again, but not this one.

My hen had crop stasis/sour crop and her poops improved too, but then she started having water poop after. It’s been a month of diarrhea,

I’m still trying to figure out what it could be , but i think chickens need time for their digestive systems to recover, because sour crop messes up their digestion for some.

Is your hens crop emptying and does she seem ok?

I used a digestive aid too but i went off of using it for about a few weeks and my hens seem happy without it. I might put it back in the water in a few days and see if she improves in her poop

Sorry I didn't see your post here. I'm not getting alerts when someone replies anymore.
My hen got better for 9-10 days, but yesterday morning she was lethargic and alas, the crop was huge again. I screwed up when I treated her w/Monistat by not going the full 7 days (I went 5). She seemed fully recovered and I was anxious not to have to force it on her anymore. I've started again and will go the 7 days. She has been without food 24 hours, so I was thinking of giving her a little cooked rice today.
She just stared laying again after 3 months. In fact she laid a soft shell in the crate last night. I'm kicking myself for not following trough. At least I hope that's what brought the sour crop on again.
It seems worse this time. She's vomited twice when I've picked her up. I sequestered her yesterday AM and no improvement noticed thus far.
How is it going with your hen?

I’m sorry to hear that. My hen had crop stasis which caused her crop to be very firm and full of feed that wasn’t moving along. So her breath smelled bad and the food was fermenting. I never felt any liquid in her crop although it was getting sour.

I don’t exactly know how yeast buildup causes fluid in the crop, but i do know it makes things hard to move along.

I bought acidified copper sulfate from my feed store - it came in a powder form at my feed store. It turns the water blue. It apparently is a really strong treatment for sour crop, but I was very scared to give it to her, plus she was not drinking water so i could not get her to drink it. That is an option many people use - Isolate the hen and have her drink copper sulfate water for a short period of time, although it is crucial to make sure you are dosing correctly since it’s toxic when over dosed/undissolved.

What ended up happening is that I had gone to the vet and they gave me Enroflaxoin (wrong spelling), an antibiotic. I was stalling using it but I was desperate because she had low oxygen and seemed like she was going to die, so I gave her the antibiotics for 14 days via the vets information.

She got worse over the 14 days but she suddenly got better. I don’t know exactly if she had some sort of bacterial infection causing the illness post crop stasis or if it was just time that sorted it out.

If you are not giving monistat maybe also give her diluted apple cider vinegar water (make sure it is organic and pure) to balance her gut health and pH…

Sorry for the super long message :) I was super exausted with my hens crop issue that lasted 2 months with her getting worse and worse. I really thought I was gonna lose her until the unexpected happened , sour crop is annoying!

Yes, very annoying. Thanks for the info. I complete the monistat course tomorrow, so I'll have to re-assess my next moves then. The copper sulfate is on the table as a treatment.
Thanks again!

Of course!! I was always too scared of something going wrong with copper sulfate but i know it’s pretty effective. Just be careful and wishing you good luck!!

I have not had crop issues since I started give them Fermented Feed . Mix the feed with water . Let it set for a couple of days . Stir it once a day .Once it starts smelling. Begin feeding it to them ( drain it with a cullender ) . add dry feed again . Do it in a pail that is deep enough so it continues to ferment.

I’m glad to hear she’s still “bokking along”! I read her story. My girl is currently enjoying our bathroom spa as we try to resolve crop issues
