I'm wondering if something like the Grandpa's step-to-open feeder would help keep my food in my chickens and not the wandering small birds and ground squirrels? We're working the squirrel problem, but they are rampant this summer. I've also seen sizeable flocks of small birds exiting the chicken run when I go out to visit and the food is going away very quickly!

They do sell these pre-fabricated ones at our Tractor supply. Rightly placed on the top shelves. $70. ***Gulp!*** I think I have enough material "squirreled" around here --forgive the pun-- to try to make my own.

If I get it going I will for sure report back with some pictures. I feel like my bags of feed are disappearing fast too. My birds free range so I leave the Black Rubber dishes out for them. I think also the deer are getting fat around here too. I put it under the deck but I know I've seen a white tail sticking out from under there. They have long tongues, I'm sure of it.

We have a problem with Rock Squirrels (a larger ground squirrel) here. After four years they have yet to figure out how to get the feed out of my treadle feeders. It completely stops the wild birds from eating the feed. So, even with the expense of one of these types of feeders, it doesn't take long to re-coup your lost feed costs. You can find plans for my feeder in my sig. line.
